'Blue' proving sex still sells Nicole Kidman's Broadway debut in The Blue Room is well on its way to being the event of the Broadway season and the most intensely sought-after nonmusical ticket of all time. "There's been nothing even close," says Gerald Schoenfeld, chairman of the Shubert Organization. The show, which opens Dec. 13 and plays for a limited engagement of 111 performances at the Cort Theatre, is approximately 80% sold. All tickets may be gone by the time it begins previews Nov. 27. Though theater ticket sales traditionally slip around the holidays, the episodic play, featuring Kidman in a variety of roles and sexual couplings, is taking in $ 100,000 a day and has already grossed $ 3.2 million. To safeguard against scalpers, each buyer is limited to six tickets. "The sex is what they're buying -- as well as the hope that Tom Cruise might appear in the audience," says Janet Robinson, vice president of Group Sales Box Office. Contrary to rumor, Kidman will do all the nude scenes here that she did in England. However, a convergence of circumstances few Broadway producers woud dare dream of is also influencing sales. For many ticket buyers, the show represents a likely respite from a fall theater season that has been, by all accounts, dismal. "I wouldn't give two cents for most of the shows I've seen this season," said Laura Bader, a Bergdorf Goodman designer who acquired a Jan. 6 ticket. But The Blue Room was extravagantly reviewed in London, where it was performed earlier this year at the Donmar Warehouse. Many patrons are drawn to anything written by David Hare, the British playwright most recently represented on Broadway by another star vehicle, The Judas Kiss with Liam Neeson. There's also director Sam Mendes, who masterminded the equally hot revival of Cabaret.Even the Kidman factor involves more than just the lure of seeing a film star live on stage. "I'm an actress," said ticket buyer Laura Mayer, "and I'm interested to see what she's got." But those hoping to snap a picture of Kidman's unclothed form will most likely be stymied. Says Schoenfeld, "Our people are on the alert for anything. We have special security of our own."
